From Jewelry to Documents: How to Organize and Store Your Valuables in a Safe Box - adimosafe

Having a safe box, you can be sure that your most valuables things are going to be protected from fire, water, and burglary. But is that it? Just shoving stuff in is not the most efficient way to use it.

What's important enough to keep inside your safe? How should you organize it? Will you be able to access those things easily?

These are the questions that we are going to solve in this blog.

What should you keep inside your safe box?

One of the most common questions when you buy your first safe box is this one. Basically because everything seems significant, from that very expensive piece of jewelry to the first drawing your kid made you. So what goes in?

There are 3 basics rules:

  1. If the cost of replacement is extremely high, keep it inside your safe. Think about critical papers as wills, passports, birth certificates, stocks, and funds papers, your deed, etc. You should consider not only how much money will it cost if lost, but your time to replace it as well.
  2. If its value is not monetary but affective, and you would regret loosing it, keep it inside your safe. Your grandma's ring, the baseball you catch in a game with your dad, that first love letter between you and your wife. You can measure the cost of a lost memory, but you can imagine how painful would it be to lose it.
  3. If it's something you may need in case of sickness or trial, keep it inside your safe. Your taxes are a great example, but you don't need to keep everything inside. The IRS has 3 years in which to audit Federal income tax returns, lighten your record load by discarding certain checks and bills once they have served their purpose. But save cancelled checks, and keep all medical bills for 3 years.

Priority is the key word, and at the same time objectivity. Make a list of every item you feel that needs to go in, then read it over and reduce it by half. Repeat that process until you feel there's no chance the things remaining in the list could be left out.

Why should you organize your safe box?

We often think about having a safe box in order to guard things for our self, but as heads of a family we have to consider the possibility that another member could have the need to access our stuff and, in that case, has to have the way to found that thing fast.

Fatalities and serious sickness are awful things to think about, we understand, only that when this type of things happen forewarned is forearmed.

Having a system to keep your safe box in order and explaining that to your family in case they need to get something is going to assure that peace of mind you were looking for when you bought it in the first place.

Your safe box should always be properly closed in order to be completely water and fireproof. That's why someone else in your home must know the code that opens it, in case you are not around, and they need to get something.

How should you organize your safe box?

Keep a colored or alphabetical folder system to storage your papers by groups, such as:
    Important documents:
    • Wills

    • Birth Certificates (for everyone in the family)

    • Social Security cards (for everyone in the family)

    • Marriage License

    • Passports

    • Stocks and Bonds

    House papers:
    • Property Titles
    • Deeds
    • House insurance papers
    • Inventory of mayor assets
    Medical and Insurance records
    • Life Insurance Information
    • Immunization Records
    • Clinical history or medical records

And for other things, have in mind that some safe boxes come with special compartments for jewelry or guns or large items that you may need to guard.
